What is Little Athletics?
Little Athletics is a non-profit local community sport, that focuses on the fundamentals of "Family, Fun & Fitness".
We cater for children from ages 5-16 (U6-U17), running a summer and winter season, with both individual and team events.
Is Little Athletics 12-months?
Yes, Little Athletics is broken into two seasons - Summer (Track & Field) and Winter (Cross Country). The Summer season begins on Friday 4th October and concludes at the end of March, with the Winter season starting in April and concluding in August. The calendar will be uploaded to our website.
When and where do you participate?
Our weekly Summer program is run on a Friday afternoon at Churchill Reserve, 99-115 Waller Street, Benalla Vic 3672. Start time is 5pm and will run for approximately 2-2.5 hours.
What's involved? What do the children do?
Children will participate in a weekly rotational program that consists of various track & field events. Each week the program will change to cover all eligible events for each age group. Children will participate and compete against each other within their age groups. Their goal is to achieve their personal bests (PB's) and accumulate points based on their weekly results. The weekly program also encourages socialising and making friend, for both children and parents, getting out and participating in sport, leading a healthy and active lifestyle.
Are registrations open? How much does it cost?
Registrations will open in early September 2024 and the Summer registration includes Winter, covering a 12-month period (from September 2024 until September 2025). Your children must be 5 years of age to join. Our "early bird" fee is $120 per child, with a generous family discount for each additional child. Our "regular" fee is $130 per child, also with a generous family discount for each additional child. Our goal is to keep our registration fees as low as possible, to help encourage a maximum level of participation during the rise in cost of living.
Is there any assistance available with registration fees?
Yes, there are organisations that can help cover the costs of Little Athletics registration fees. The Tomorrow Today foundation in Benalla is one of the local community organisations that can assist families. The Victorian Government can also assist through their "Get Active" program, offering vouchers of up to $200. More information can be found on our website.
Does my child need to wear a uniform?
At this stage, a Benalla LAC uniform is not compulsory at local Centre level. However, we highly encourage everyone to purchase a uniform and wear it proudly every Friday afternoon. Your LAVic registration patch is compulsory as part of your registration terms. If your children wish to participate at another Centre, an Open Day, Region and/or State Championships, a Benalla LAC uniform is compulsory. Uniforms can be purchased for $30 - we offer a singlet or polo shirt.
What are parents expected to do?
Little Athletics is a non-profit, volunteer run organistation. We require the assistance of all parents to run our weekly programs. There are various roles that will need to be completed - leading your age group, running a field event, measuring/spiking, raking the jump pit, starting races, cooking the BBQ, setting and packing up etc... "Many hands make light work!"
Is there a weekly coaching program?
At this stage, there is no program in place. This could change throughout the season, if there are any parents interested in taking up a coaching position. We will look at organising relay teams in early October and we will require parents to coach these teams. Training will be provided for anyone interested in coaching.
